People leave a companion app for one of three reasons: it forgot who they were, it refused something they did not expect it to refuse, or they started wondering where ten months of conversation was actually stored.
Six alternatives, compared on exactly those three things. Every price and policy below was read from the vendor’s own page and carries the date it was checked.
The short answer
| If your problem is | Try | Free tier | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| It forgets you | Kindroid | Yes | 15.99 dollars |
| Where the data lives | Layla | Yes | Not published |
| Paying to find out | 976.ai | Yes, renews daily | 10.99 dollars |
| Wanting real documentation | Nastia | No | Behind sign-in |
| Wanting it on your phone | EVA AI | Yes | 11.99 dollars |
| The writing quality | DreamGen | Yes | 7.83 dollars |
None of the six requires a credit card to create an account.
Kindroid, if memory is the problem
Persistent memory across sessions plus voice, on web, iOS and Android at once. That combination is rare here, because both app stores restrict adult content and most vendors settle for a web app you add to your home screen.
If what you valued was a character who knew you and referred back to things, this is the closest match on this page.
It uses third-party age verification rather than a checkbox, which is a genuine signal about how the vendor operates and also means signup asks more of you than the others.

Layla, if privacy is the real question
Roleplay, characters and image generation running on the phone itself, with most modes working fully offline.
That is a different category of answer from a good privacy policy. When the model runs on your device, there is no retention period to read, no training clause to check and no terms update that can change what happens to what you already wrote. The trade is that your phone does the work, so output speed depends on your hardware rather than on somebody’s server.
Its price is not published, which ClickTug records as a stated fact rather than filling in a number from elsewhere.

976.ai, if you would rather not pay to find out
The free tier is the reason to look. It is permanent, it renews every day, and it covers the entire character roster with voice messages included, so it tests the actual product rather than a cut-down version of it.
The paid tiers are also priced sensibly against each other: three times the tokens for under twice the money as you go up, which is the opposite of how tiering usually works in this category.

Nastia, if you want to read the paperwork
The most thoroughly documented vendor in this directory. It publishes separate policies for age verification, child safety, synthetic media, take-down and record-keeping, under French law with GDPR attached.
Two things to weigh against that, and they are on the listing because they belong side by side with the first: the pricing page is a sign-in screen, purchases are stated to be non-refundable, and the terms reserve the right to delete an account and its contents at the company’s discretion. The same document also grants you full ownership of what you create. Both clauses are real.

EVA AI, if you want a real app
iOS and Android rather than a web app on your home screen, at 11.99 dollars with a free tier.

DreamGen, if the writing is what you miss
Built for story and roleplay rather than chat that happens to run long, and the cheapest here at 7.83 dollars.
It also publishes the clearest position on model training in this directory: off by default, opt-in only, and the vendor states plainly that withdrawing consent cannot un-train a model that has already learned. Most policies in this category do not address the question at all.

The question nobody answers
Of every companion vendor ClickTug has assessed, none states what happens to your companion and its memory after you cancel. Whether it is retained, exportable or deleted is not documented anywhere, despite continuity being the thing the subscription actually sells.
It is worth asking before you invest months in a character. If you get an answer in writing, we would like to see it.
