Janitor AI is one of the largest character chat platforms there is, and most people looking for an alternative are not looking for something bigger. They want a specific thing fixed: a free tier that does not run out mid-scene, a character that holds together over a long session, or the knowledge that what they write is not sitting on somebody else’s server indefinitely.

None of the six requires a credit card to create an account. Test all of them against your own prompts before paying anything.
976.ai, if the free tier is the point
The reason to look here is the free allowance. It is permanent, it renews every day, and it reaches the entire character roster with voice messages included, so it is a fair test of the product rather than a cut-down demo of it.
The paid tiering is also priced sensibly against itself: Premium gives three times the tokens of Plus for under twice the money. Most tiering in this category charges more per unit as you go up. This does the opposite, which is the right way round.

DreamGen, if you care about the writing
Built for story and roleplay rather than chat that happens to run long, and at 7.83 dollars it is the cheapest paid entry on this page.
It also publishes the clearest position on model training in this directory: training is off by default, opt-in only, and the vendor states plainly that withdrawing consent cannot un-train a model that has already learned from your work. That last sentence is rarer than it should be.

Backyard AI, if you want real control
The deepest authoring tools here. Lorebooks, author’s notes, response grammars and raw model parameters are exposed rather than hidden behind a personality slider, and the free tier carries the same context window as the paid plan.
One thing to know before you start, because most write-ups still get it wrong: Backyard was formerly Faraday.dev and is widely described as the app that keeps everything on your own machine. Its own download page now says that desktop app is deprecated and unsupported, and the live product is a cloud service. If local operation was the appeal, LM Studio is the honest answer.

Venice AI, if you want one tool for everything
A general assistant that refuses far less than a mainstream one, so it handles roleplay alongside ordinary work. API access is included on every tier including the free one, which none of the others here match.
The trade is focus: there is no character authoring layer, so if you want persistent personas and lorebooks, Backyard will suit you better.

LM Studio, if privacy is the real question
Runs open models on your own hardware. Nothing you write is transmitted, which means retention periods, training clauses and terms changes stop applying to you entirely. It is free permanently and needs no account at all.
The cost is your hardware and a little setup. A capable machine gets close to the hosted tools; a modest one will feel slower. If the reason you are reading this is that you would rather your conversations were not on somebody else’s server, this is the only complete answer on the page.

How to choose in one pass
Run the same prompt through two or three of the free tiers and compare what comes back. It takes twenty minutes and it is the only test that reflects how you actually write.
Then check the fact that matters for your situation, which is recorded on every listing: what the vendor keeps, for how long, and whether it trains on what you write.
