Character AI works well until it does not, and the point where it stops working is usually one of three: the filter interrupts a scene you were enjoying, the character forgets who you are, or you start wondering what happens to everything you have typed into it.
Different problems need different replacements. This is six of them, compared on the things that decide it. Every price and policy below was read from the vendor’s own page and carries the date it was checked on its listing.

None of the six asks for a credit card to create an account, so you can test all of them against your own prompts before paying anything. That matters more than any feature list, because sample conversations on a homepage are chosen.
Backyard AI, if the filter is the problem
The deepest authoring controls of anything here. Lorebooks, author’s notes, response grammars and raw model parameters are exposed rather than hidden behind a personality slider, which is the difference between steering a character and hoping.
Worth knowing before you start: Backyard was formerly Faraday.dev and is still widely described as the app that keeps everything on your own machine. Its own download page now says that desktop app is deprecated and unsupported, and the live product is a cloud service. Most write-ups have not caught up. If local operation was the reason you were interested, LM Studio is the honest answer instead.

Kindroid, if you want to be remembered
Persistent memory across sessions and voice, which is the specific thing people miss when a Character AI conversation resets and the character no longer knows them. It is also one of the few in this category on web, iOS and Android at once, which is unusual given both app stores restrict adult content.
Kindroid uses third-party age verification rather than a checkbox. That is worth knowing either way: it is a real signal about how the vendor operates, and it also means signup asks more of you than most.

DreamGen, if you care about the prose
Built for story and roleplay writing rather than chat that happens to be long. It also publishes the clearest position on model training in this directory: training is off by default, opt-in only, and the vendor states plainly that withdrawing consent cannot un-train a model that has already learned. That last sentence is rarer than it sounds.
At 7.83 dollars it is the cheapest paid entry here.

Venice AI, if you want one tool for everything
A general assistant that refuses far less than a mainstream one, so it covers roleplay alongside ordinary work. API access is included on every tier including the free one, which none of the others here match.
The trade is focus. It has no character authoring layer, so if you want lorebooks and persistent personas, Backyard or Kindroid will suit you better.

Nine dollars, and the strictest wording on minors we have read anywhere in this category, with no exception for fictional, drawn or AI-generated work. API access arrives from the middle tier.

LM Studio, if privacy is the real question
Runs open models on your own hardware. Nothing you write is transmitted, so retention policies, training clauses and terms changes stop applying to you entirely. It is free, permanently, and it needs no account at all.
The cost is your hardware and a little setup. A capable machine gives results close to the hosted tools; a modest one will feel slower. If the reason you are reading this page is that you do not want your conversations sitting on somebody else’s server, this is the only complete answer on it.

How to choose in one pass
Start with the free tiers, because all six have one and none needs a card. Run the same prompt through two or three and compare what comes back. Sample galleries are curated; your own prompt is not.
Then check the one fact that suits your situation, which is on every listing: what the vendor keeps, for how long, and whether it trains on what you write.
